The People vs. Larry Flynt - 1332 Words

Freedom of expression has always been a heated and heavily debated topic throughout our society, more so in recent times due to the increasing amount of freedoms that we gain. However, it is only natural that free speech be something of extreme amounts of conflict since this right is expressed in the very first amendment of the Constitution. But, how loosely should such an important document within our history be interpreted? This has been a question for years, and it is obvious that this particular amendment presents itself through our day-to-day activities. According to Mills, if this political right is infringed upon, it is completely justified that resistance occurs, as it did. Importance of arts education Analysis Essay Example For Students

Importance of arts education Analysis Essay The Importance Of the Arts In 2002, President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind act (NCSC). This is basically a mandate to schools to put an emphasis on doing What works based on scientific research; expanded parental options: and expanded local control and flexibility (Auras 89). Under NCSC, schools are required to demonstrate adequate yearly progress toward academic proficiency goals established by each state, with an emphasis on math, reading, and science. Because of this act that is supposed to help schools increase their test scores, the school districts have cut funding for arts programs and added funding to programs such as math, reading, and science. However, administrative decisions that were originally made to improve test scores have been detrimental to teachers and students alike and have threatened arts education. The cutting of arts and music programs to increase time spent on other core test subject areas has proved to do more harm than good. We will write a custom essay on Importance of arts education Analysis specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Arts educations have shown increases in memory, auditory and visual memory, and even increases in Q. Arts teachers have also lost many jobs because most of their programs have been cut or they owe have only a part time job. Other teachers who teach the math, science, and English courses have had to change their coursework in order to accommodate the changes due to the NCSC Act (Spoon). Children start education from the very moment they are brought into the world, and we continue to learn until the day we die. We also recognize that formal education, where children can learn basic concepts of math, language, and science, is very important. This is why we study the arts as well. Studying these subjects together allows us to better understand the Others. However, many Officials seem to believe that standardized test scores re what really matters, so they cut the arts programs in schools to give children more education in test subject areas. What they fail to realize is that arts education is vital to an effective and high quality education because such opportunities use a different part of the brain. This is why the arts education correlates with higher test scores, IQ, and even memory in children. The arts are essential to the human race, which is why music and other arts programs should not be cut from schools and communities, In order to better understand the issues at play here, it is crucial to know what he NCSC is and how it has changed education. *The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 was the reauthorizing of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (SEES) Of 1965 ( 136). SEES, Which had been revised every five years, focused primarily on providing teetered education tuning tort economically disadvantaged students. In turn, SEES was reauthorized and revised in 1994 as the Improving Americas Schools Act, which was what eventually became No Child Left Behind. Its name comes from the preamble which explains that it, closes the achievement gap with accountability, flexibility, and choice, so that no child is left Enid (Rue-awe 92). Although this idea looked very suitable and factual on paper, it did not look so great when thinking of the arts programs. Because they werent part Of the core curriculum, they werent funded Very well Which made it hard for schools to offer them to their students. Instead, schools put all of their focus into achieving higher test scores. The NCSC caused a nationwide push to produce higher test scores in the areas Of math, science, and English Which caused many schools to cut arts programs and instead focus on test subject areas. This is true in Louisiana, where children ho had been involved in arts programs have been taken out orthodox courses and put into extra math, science, and English courses. Many students in the Limited States have little or no access to arts education as a result of policies intended to improve the English language arts and mathematics test scores. Students who come from low-income families, or racial or ethnic minorities, who have limited English proficiency, or attend schools identified as not meeting annual yearly progress under No Child Let Behind are more likely than other students to report a decrease in instructional time for arts education. This act also effected the teachers courses and curriculums as well. Spoon) Teachers who teach the math, science, and English courses have had to change their coursework in order to accommodate the changes due to the NCSC Act, and so have the arts education teachers. Author Kidney Spoon pointed out that, The investigation on the curriculum and instructional time for arts education revealed that music and visual art education for kindergarten to fifth grade remained generally the same since 2001 At the middle school level, the music curriculum experienced a cut. In grades six to eight, daily instructional mime for math, language arts, science, and social studies amounted to fifty-five minutes whereas music and art have only forty-two minutes (Spoon 5). In order to achieve the math, reading, and language arts scores needed to get government funding administrations chose to cut time from other subjects, such as science and social studies to spend more time on the subjects that most students were struggling with. These teachers had to make longer lesson plans and adjust to the longer class times. .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 , .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 .postImageUrl , .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 , .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0:hover , .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0:visited , .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0:active { border:0!important; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0:active , .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0 .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u486357346b414c3564262cd0da71b9b0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Vegetarianism EssayThis also drastically modified the music and art curriculum not allowing a significant number of students the opportunity to e in general music or art classes because of their more important core classes. Cindy Spoon investigates the condition of a public schools arts education program under the NCSC Act and obtains teachers perspectives on their experiences under the federal policy, This research took place in the Ribbon Valley School District, which is located in a rural area to Ohio and earmarked for Title funding. This and other problems the teachers at Ribbon Valley identified have a potentially marginalia effect on the arts as a whole as well as those students who value their schooling experiences in the arts. For instance, if the circumstances at Ribbon Valley are representative of other school districts across the nation, they could lead to a shortage visual artists, musicians, visual art educators, and music teachers in public education. As exposure to music or other art forms declines, students will not gain an appreciation for the arts disciplines nor will they learn about career opportunities available in the arts (Spoon 7). Furthermore, cutbacks in arts education in schools affect younger generations of potential audiences and lead to lack of public support for the arts. The lack f students having support and knowledge for the arts puts all Of the art and music productions at risk in the future. With the decline of people participating in supporting the arts it is becoming much more difficult to continue those professions. Not enough children are exposed to the arts in order to develop an understanding Of What they are about. Spoon used a really good example when talking about cutting the arts in education by comparing it to cutting out an important food group to a childs diet. Reducing or eliminating the arts (and other disciplines) from a childs educational diet is likened to cutting food groups room a childs nutritional regime before he or she has reached physical maturity. Dietary deficiencies lead to developmental defects and disease in children. Educational deficiencies lead to the mental and intellectual equivalences of these problems (Spoon 9). Fifth arts have been proven to increase students intelligence and test scores, why would we take away something that helps? We would not willingly limit our childrens diets to only two of the six required food groups and expect them to grow into hearty individuals, so why would we want to focus education on a couple of subjects and sacrifice the social, mental, and cognitive health of our children? (Spoon 3). In order to keep students diets healthy education needs to offer all parts of the food group in order for them to grow efficiently. Even though there is clearly a correlation between education in the arts and improved test scores and other benefits, there are many people who believe that arts education is not necessary _ Budgets are tight all across the board, So officials have to prioritize where the money goes. Math, reading, and science are skills that can be measured directly by test scores. But the value arts, cannot be measured that way. So, many say why bother putting money into something that we cannot see the measurable benefit from? Louisiana, is trying to see things differently. They are working with nonprofit arts organizations and culture programs to partner with Louisiana public schools to help assist in giving children an education in the arts (American-Beardsley). The nationwide focus on producing higher test scores in English and mathematics has caused Louisiana school districts to exercise this option and reassign students from arts education courses to additional instruction in English and math. Several studies have found hat students in the lowest socioeconomic conditions who engage in significant arts study outperform students with less arts experience in both language and mathematics (Baker 18). This study was done by Richard A. Baker who is a Fine Arts Program Coordinator for the Louisiana Department to Education. This study examined high-stakes test scores for 37,222 eighth grade students enrolled in music and/or visual arts classes and those students not enrolled in arts courses This study was limited to two groups of 200/-?08 eighth grade students, (Baker). It included those who received performance-based music and visual arts instruction and those who received no instruction. Each group was tested over the entire year and the results were pulled together to find a number of interesting findings when looking at how music education helps increase test scores in subjects such as math and English language arts. (Baker) The study main objective examined music enrollment as a predictor of success in English and math scores. The first statistic Baker found was that, music students overall had a mean English score that was eight points higher than the mean score for no music students. High and middle SEES music students scored eight points ore than no music students on the English tests, and low SEES music students scored seven points more than their counterparts (Baker 17). This statistic proves that music does in fact help students learn concepts that continue With them outside of the music environment. .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d , .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d .postImageUrl , .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d , .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d:hover , .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d:visited , .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d:active { border:0!important; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d:active , .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u59ef5c878ba2a59b7592f8144447ba9d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Gillian Anderson EssayWhy would schools be diminishing the effects of music when in fact it is helping improve test scores that are more important Students need a whole exploratory education, which includes performance arts study. If we are strictly going off of numbers, why is everyone so quick to get rid of art and music education when in fact there could be other options? (Baker). Music education and physical education have long coexisted in schools. Music teachers frequently but unfairly characterize the relationship between these two subject areas as a competition tort enrollment, student interest, and community support. This competitive situation can be readily seen when schools are forced to choose which programs to eliminate in circumstances like the current economic climate, (Freer ) The value of physical education and music programs diminishes in light of emphasis on required standardized testing. Studies have shown that music and art education have significantly improved test scores in two of the biggest subjects, but its these programs that are being cut more often than any physical education program or team sport. Freer points out that, music students are more than mere participants in our classes; they are developing, growing, and changing throughout the course of their schooling (Freer 33). Music participants learn more than just music in their classes. They learn how to count, how to read music, and use hand eye coordination to develop their learning, and that knowledge carries out to math and language arts classes especially. Not only can being involved With music improve test scores, it can also improve IQ and memory. Another recent study that was conducted through Appalachian State University, looked at six. Year. Old children who took various music lessons over thirty-six weeks of the school year. This found that children who took keyboard instruction and/or God;lye method vocal instruction raised their IQ by about 2. 7 points (Steele 7). Another objective looked at the difference in memory after musical instruction. This report studied children in middle school who had instruction in l earning a musical instrument, auditory perception, and music theory training over the course two years. It was able to conclude that children who had musical instruction over two years raised their visual and auditory memory by over a point (Guiding 613). This is evidence that shows people being involved in some art or music program can in fact raise their visual and auditory perception. These are two skills that are used throughout life time and time again, Arts and music education are very good when developing the right side of childrens brains. The right brain is centrally involved in not only processing social-emotional information, facilitating attachment functions, and regulating bodily and affective states, but also in the control of vital functions supporting survival and enabling the organism to cope actively and passively with stress (Score 10). However, if the human race was only to be educated in left-brained activities, which is whats being developed by standardized testing, we would be useless. There needs to be an outlet for our creative, right brain to express itself. This is Why we study the arts as well. Studying these subjects together allows us to better understand the others. It s also keeping the arts lieu_ Although there is no physically measurable way to see the benefit of arts education, it is clearly needed in the world. In order to have people better understand the world they live in, it is pertinent that they be involved in the arts in some way. Live education in the arts will promote a more well-rounded community. Yes, children need the information they learn in their academic classes. But they also need to be made aware of all of the art that is out there and open their minds to new ideas, instead of constantly filling their heads with equations and facts. Arts funding should be increased in schools acros s the nation. With benefits that include a correlation been higher test scores, raised IQ, and better visual and auditory memory, dont see a reason not to increase the funding. Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPC)

Introduction The Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs) have the mandate of preparing and maintaining detailed emergency plans as stated in the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA). Since the year 1987, the state emergency response commission (SERC), as stated in the Connecticut General Statutes’ Section 22a-601 (b) (DEMHS 1), created local planning districts.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Local Emergency Planning Committee’s (LEPC) specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Upon recognizing that towns and cities are vulnerable to numerous threats and disasters such as ice storms, aircraft accidents, hurricanes, forest fires, earthquakes, and tornadoes, the Local Emergency Planning Committee prepares for these emergencies besides making appropriate plans to deal with them in the event of their occurrence (SERC 1). The paper looks at the components of LEPT, meetings, and the existi ng plans in the town of New London. It also evaluates the possible change suggestions and improvements for the plan. Components of the LEPC The management of the LEPT consists of the Chief Executive Officer who is charged with the management of significant emergencies, resource mobilization, and ordering of any evacuations from the disaster. The assistant to the chief executive officer is the â€Å"Emergency Management Director who has the task of managing and organizing the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC)† (SERC 1). He/she also serves in establishing communication within EOC, departmental coordination, and coordinating emergency plans. The third member of the committee is the fire leader (superior fire leader-in-charge). He or she is responsible for the determination of any areas vulnerable to catastrophes that need evacuation. He/she may also order any evacuations as deemed necessary (DEMHS 1). The emergency management communication officer is responsible for coordinating radio communications in the EOC in response to disasters. Other members represent the various departments involved with emergency response including the fire department, police department, EOO manager, public works department, emergency management director, public information officer, and health and medical coordinator. The response further includes communications coordinator, warning coordinators, evacuation coordinator, shelter/mass care coordinator, resource manager, town attorney, superintendent of schools, treasurer, military department, volunteer organizations, private utility companies, animal care, and control coordinator among other tasked organizations (SERC 5).Advertising Looking for essay on public administration? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Meetings An annual review of the local emergency planning committee’s emergency plan is followed according to the regional guidelines. This keeps emergency response plans for the town up-to-date. The LEPC meets once after every two months with the main meeting taking place annually when the strategies and plans are reviewed. Members are also elected with reports on preparedness and financing alongside normal business being made (DEMHS 1). The last update in the emergency response plan was made a year ago in the annual meeting with the members unanimously agreeing on the changes. Personal opinions The disaster preparedness team is a necessary department in any modernized society in the light of the experience in disasters and emergencies. The United States and the state of Connecticut in particular are susceptible to accidents and natural disasters especially forest fires. In the past episodes, there have been losses of life that could have been prevented in the presence of adequate disaster preparedness. The opportunity is now present with the establishment of LEPC especially that of New London. The organization should however be objective in its plans and strategies with proper definition of the various roles to be played. Limitations and Suggestions The elaborate plans made by the LEPC are adequate. They will prove effective should a disaster occur. However, there is a little knowledge on the existence of the body among the citizens with most of them being oblivious of the safety measures in the case of a disaster. This seems evident in the previous response in disasters in the recent past. There is also no clear demarcation of the roles of the various members especially on who is responsible for major decisions on the evacuations between the fire department and the Chief Executive Officer. Despite the above shortfalls, the body has effectively laid down strategies, which are simplistic and easy to follow. Minimum possible resources are planned for with a true reflection of the real situation in disasters. The communication department is effective in communicating changes to the departments involved with various drills being evident especially in the police department.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Local Emergency Planning Committee’s (LEPC) specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Given the opportunity to lead the committee, my role would be championing for awareness, disaster preparedness, and response to disasters among the residents of the town. This would involve more adverts, posters, booklets, and setting up of more drills in public places and buildings. A law on safety requirements for various public areas is also required. The committee is a good body/instrument that can champion this matter. Lead agency for Hazardous Materials The efficient handling of hazardous materials within the town falls under the LEPC (SERC 3). The fire section is charged with the responsibility of separating, steadying, and controlling occurrences of risky stuffs until their proper elimination and dumping. Actions involved include evacuatio n and other measures relevant in protecting the town’s inhabitants from the hazards (SERC 1). In the event of a hazardous material accident, the person serving as the senior-fire-officeholder-in-charge is responsible for giving directions in the scene of the accident. The other person serving the same role is the municipal fire chief as stated in Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-know Act (EPCRA) (DEMHS 4). The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) â€Å"under the State Emergency Response Commission (SERC), as specified under Title 22a, Chapter 446e, has the responsibility of planning for any material incidents in the community† (SERC 1). It therefore stands out as a crucial body that defines the effectiveness of any actions taken in this kind of an emergency. Fire Department role The fire department has a central role in LEPC. Its preparedness is crucial in any disaster management. In the occurrence of a catastrophe, the section ships vehicles, workforce, and instrumentation to the place of the disaster. When an EOC is activated during an emergency, the department also sends a representative to aid in planning and management.Advertising Looking for essay on public administration? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More It also briefs the EOC on the situation on the ground (SERC 12). The fire department â€Å"manages the rescue operations in the scene, determines the need for evacuations, and directs fire operations and the resources available† (SERC 13). The department is also responsible for protecting those at risk from the disaster by evacuating them to safer grounds. It also briefs all the other responsible organizations on the dangers involved especially during the emergency operations. Conclusion The Local Emergency Planning Committee is charged with the responsibility of planning adequately before disasters and emergencies. The membership and roles are defined in each locality with the various members involved having defined functions. The disaster preparedness in the town is adequate with improvements needed in the public sensitization methods. Works Cited DEMHS. Model Local Emergency Operations Plan, 2012. The Crimes of Margaret Allen

The Crimes of Margaret Allen On February 5, 2005, Wenda Wright was cleaning the home of Margaret Allen when Allens purse containing $2,000 turned up missing. Allen was furious about the missing money and accused Wright of stealing it. When Wright denied it and tried to leave, Allen struck her in the head, causing her to fall to the floor. Determined to get the housekeeper to confess, Wright asked her 17-year-old nephew Quinton Allen, to bind Wrights wrists and legs with a belt. Allen then beat and tortured Wright for over two hours with bleach, fingernail polish remover, rubbing alcohol and hair spritz, which she poured onto her face and down her throat. Begging for Her Life Barely able to breathe, Wright begged Allen to let her go. Her cries for help woke up one of Allens children who walked into the room and witnessed what was happening. Allen instructed the child to rip off a piece of duct tape that she tried to put over Wrights mouth, but because her face was so wet the tape did not stick. Allen then strangled Wright to death with a belt. Allen, her nephew, and Allens roommate, James Martin, buried Wrights body in a shallow grave off the highway. Later Quinton Allen went to the police and confessed to his part in the murder and led authorities to where they buried the body. Margaret Allen was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping. Autopsy Report During Allens trial, forensic pathologist and chief medical examiner for  Brevard County, Florida, Dr. Sajid Qaiser, testified about the results of the autopsy performed on Wenda Wright. According to the report, Wright had multiple bruising on her face, the front, and back of her ear, her left torso, and all over her left side, trunk, right hand, thigh, knee,  left eyebrow, forehead, upper arm, and shoulder area.   Wright’s wrists and neck showed signs of ligation, which meant she was hung or something was tied tightly around those areas. Based on these discoveries, he concluded that Wright died as a result of homicidal violence. The jury found Allen guilty of first-degree murder and kidnapping.   Penalty Phase During the penalty phase of the trial, Dr. Michael Gebel, a neurological physician, testified that he had discovered that Allen suffered over the years from multiple head injuries. He said that she had significant intracranial injuries and was at the lower end of intellectual capacity. He went on to say that Allens organic brain injury likely destroyed her impulsive control and her ability to control her moods. Because of this, Dr. Gebel felt that Allen would be unable to see that her attack on Wright was a criminal act. Dr. Joseph Wu, a neuropsychiatry and brain imaging specialist, also testified that Allen was given a PET scan and that at least 10 traumatic brain injuries were found, including damage to the frontal lobe. A damaged frontal lobe affects impulse control, judgment, and mood  regulation. Due to this, he felt that Allen would not be able to follow the rules of society regarding conduct. Other witnesses, including family members, testified that Allen was subjected to a lot of abuse as a child and had a tough and violent life. Allen testified on her own behalf and recounted that she had suffered multiple head injuries from being beaten as a child. Victim Impact Testimony Wenda Wright’s domestic partner, Johnny  Dublin, testified that Wright was a good person and that Wright believed that she and Allen were good friends. Other family members gave impact statements regarding the impact Wrights murder had on the family. Despite the medical findings, the  jury recommended a sentence of death in a unanimous vote.  Circuit Judge George Maxwell followed the jurys recommendations and sentenced  Allen  to death for the murder of Wenda Wright. On July 11, 2013, the Supreme Court of Florida upheld the conviction and the death sentence. Co-Defendants Quinton Allen was found guilty of second-degree murder and received a 15-year sentence. James Martin was sentenced to 60 months in prison for his help in burying Wrights body.

Can You Take the SAT in College

Can You Take the SAT in College SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips For many students, the SAT is one of the biggest stressors to comeup during high school. Few anticipate, though, that it may still be a concern during college. Occasionally, however, you might find that you need new SATscores after high school. So can you take the SAT in college? Yes, you absolutely can. There is no regulation that forbids it. In fact, the College Board's website specifically discusses non-high school testers. This article will discuss why you might need to take the test as a college student and coversome solid information about that process- and what makes it both unique and challenging. 2 Common Reasons to Take the SAT in College The SAT isn't a ton of fun. Why would yousubject yourselfto it when you're already in college? Well, actually, there are a few reasons youmay need to take the SAT in college. Applying for Jobs or Scholarships More and more job applications are requiring test scores, and there are scholarships out there for people who score within a certain range. Usually, high school scores serve for these purposes, but not everyone takes the test in high school. Thus, aneed to take the test later arises. It's important torealize that every company and every organization is different. You must adhere to the policies ofthese individual companies and organizations if you want them to take you seriously. Do your research, and, if you can't find the answer on the internet, make sure you call or email for clarification. The hope is that you'll get a message like this the moment a companysee your scores. Transferring Schools The most commonreason that you may need to take the SAT in college is if you are seeking to transfer schools. It's immensely importantfor anyone thinking about transferring to do research into the specific requirements of the school in question. A good place to start would be to read our complete guide to how test scores play into a transfer. Many schools require test scores from potential transfers. Some have different requirementsif you transfer in your first or second year versusif you transfer later on. This is very specific to the school. Some schools recommend including test scores under certain circumstances, but not others- this is often related to how soon after high school you began your college career. Some schools ask for test scores but permit exceptions for those who never took the SAT in high school or for whom taking the SAT now would be unduly difficult. Still other schools are test-optional or test-blind. In other words, they don't require scores. At test-optional schools, you can send scores if you wish, and at test-blind schools, your scoreswill not be considered under any circumstance. This applies to both transfer students and applicants goinginto college for the first time. It may be worthwhile to read our complete guide on the topic. All this goes to show that colleges are all a little bit different. Know the policy of the school you're applying to. The first place to check for this information is on the college's website. Many have a special page covering transfers, which you can find through the admissions or application page. If you can't find the specifics you're looking for on the website, though, there's nothing wrong with emailing a contact person at the school for clarification. Ideally, you should write to someone in the admissions department (as listed on the college's website). Failing that, though, give the college a call- a phone number for their offices should definitely be listed. Yes, that's right: make a real, old-fashioned phone call. Logistics of Taking the SAT in College There are quite a few hoops to jump through when it comes to taking the test, regardless of whether you're in high school or college. It's important to know what you're getting into. How to Register You can register online or by mail. This will involve answering a number of questions about basic personal information, courses taken, etc., as well as submitting a photograph of yourself. It's a good idea to get familiar with the process before you dive right into it. Where You Can Take It You'll be taking the SAT at one of the same test centers as all the local high school students. When you register online, you can easily search for and select the most convenient option. You may have some options; you may be able to choose a location such as a local university or communitycollege campus. Regardless, you will be taking the test with high school students. Choose the test center where you'll feel most comfortable. What's Different Taking It Now Logistically, the big differences are the more stringent requirements when it comes to identification and the difficulty of getting on the waitlist. You should also note that this is age-based; college students younger than 21 don't need to sweat these differences. If you're 21 years old (or older), a student ID is unacceptable identification on test day. You must bring official, government-issued identification, such as a driver's license or passport. Also, if you're 21 years old (or older), you simply cannot be placed on the waitlist. It's impossible, by the College Board's decree. The moral of the story, then, is to register on time and avoid the issue altogether. Additionally, you should be aware that the SAT recently underwent a complete overhaul. If you're in college now, you likely took the SAT on the 2400-scale (if you did take it). We're now on a 1600-scale. The essay is technically optional, though advisable in most cases. Some content has been redesigned, abandoned, or added.Sentence completion questions, asking you to define vocab with minimal or no context, are gone. Trigonometry, on the other hand, now makes an appearance. The essay no longer asks you to argue an opinion but to analyze a passage. In short, it's not quite the test you may remember. Advice for Testers in College Remember that the SAT tests high school topics, not college topics. Don't be fooled into thinkingthat means it's very basic or somehow below you; itdoesn't necessarily make matters easier. There are likely to be a few fundamental concepts that you've gotten rusty on. This may be especially true depending on your major. If you haven't taken any math classes in college, you may have forgotten certain exponent rules or whether47 is a prime number. In other words, even though the topics may not be college-level,per se, you still need to prepare. C'mon, it won't bethat miserable. 3 Key Tips for SAT Prep in College Once again, I cannot stress enough the importance of taking some time to prepare for this test. #1: Familiarize Yourself With the SAT's Specific Style Oddly enough, the SAT tends to reward pretty literal thinking on reading and writing (don't stray far from what the textactually says), while it rewards fairly creative thinking on math (be prepared to move expressions around into novel configurations). #2: Dust Off Rusty Topics Some of the material on the SAT may feel ancient and unfamiliar. This will not do; you've got to get handy with this content. There are many helpful resources out there, but don't forget that practice makes perfect. From full-length practice tests to individual practice problems, dive into experiencing the content firsthand. #3: Consider Your Schedule and Your Needs For many people, college is a very busy season of life. From gruelingclasses, to vibrant social events, to extracurricular commitments, things tend to move at a fast pace. Nonetheless, you still need to prepare before taking the SAT. So, start your preparationprogram well ahead of the test date. Consult your calendar (and syllabi) before committing to a specific test date. You definitelydon't want to wind up taking the SAT the weekend before/after a major exam or project. You don't want to overbook yourself. Conclusion In this guide, we've covered some basics regarding why to take the SAT in college and how to get that ball rolling. While there are a few definite differences versus taking the test in high school, the fundamentals are basically the same. Logistically, the process is almost identical. You'll be at the same sort of test center, and you'll register the same way. All the same rules and regulations apply, only you will need official government-issued identification and you can't get on the waiting list(depending on your age). You will still need to prepare, just like any high school student. Don't dismiss this step- it's crucial. In fact, give yourself extra time, considering how busy college can get. What's Next? The big question is how to prepare for the test. Remember that it's not quite like it was when you were in high school, and take a peek at our complete guide to studying for the test (revisions and all). If you're shooting for a perfect score, there are a few tips that can really boost your chances- including the simple advice of viewing all questions as analytical. There are some great resources out there, such as those created by the College Board's officiallyendorsed resource, Khan Academy. However, Khan Academy will never be enough- learn why. Fashion 1980 - Now - The Fashionistas Guide Essay

Fashion 1980 - Now - The Fashionistas Guide - Essay Example The essay "Fashion 1980 - Now - The Fashionistas Guide" investigates how fashion has led to the rise of the new features of identifying gender among some of the Japanese tribes. The vibrant and outlandish fashionistas of Tokyo have led to a change of fashion in japan in a rate that is almost impossible to document without instantly being out of date. However, there are some tribes in japan that have managed to change with technological changes of fashion without abolishing their true societal origins. Apparently, there are several tribes that have evolved that one cannot miss encountering them in any time one happen to tour to the Japanese capital. For example, the changing fashion have led to the rise of a group of youngsters that refer themselves as the roller family that has seriously assumed the business of dancing to old rock and roll in large numbers especially during the afternoons of both Saturday and Sunday at the entrances of Yoyogi park without failing. However, this danci ng group is believed to be part of the Yoyogi furniture that has been in existence since 1990. The dancing group is characterized by receding hairlines bullied into thinking quiffs. Moreover, on the border of Shibula and Harajuku districts, there have emerged Grimoire, which is a shop furnished with accessories and cloths located a convenient point targeting the Dolly Kei movement. The followers of this movement dress velvets, rich embroidery and silks that distinguish themselves from non-followers.

Hedda Gabler Essay Example for Free

Hedda Gabler Essay Throughout the years people have developed an image of how a particular gender should act. In the play Hedda Gabler, the characters that are involved challenge and conform the gender stereotypes through verbal and non-verbal text. The author â€Å"Henrik Ibsen† has displayed characters such as Hedda Gabler and Julianne Tesman to challenge their stereotypical gender behaviors. Hedda Gabler, the play’s main character, challenges the common gender stereotype of a woman by portraying Gabbler as a person who has a thirst for being free. Gablers father, General Gabler is one of the main influences of her behavior challenging her feminine role. An example is ‘Tesman- â€Å"My old morning shoes, my slippers look! †¦ I missed them dreadfully. Now you should see them†. Hedda- â€Å"No thanks, it really doesn’t interest me†. This portrays Gabler showing no affection to Jorgen Tesman’s slippers. The way Hedda is not interested in Tesman’s slippers shows her little care for affection towards Tesman. This challenges the common gender stereotype because women are stereotyped to be affectionate and sensitive. Hedda Gabler is furthered portrayed by having masculine traits by non-verbal aspects of her character by having a pistol, Hedda-â€Å"[lifting the pistol and aiming] I’m going to shoot you, sir!† Brack- â€Å"No, no, no! Don’t stand there aiming that at me.† This quote represents the gun symbolically representing her masculinity and at this point, Hedda using it empowers her and used to gain some sought of power over Brack. The gun seen as a non verbal aspect of the play clearly representing Hedda Gabbler in a masculine way challenging the common stereotype of her gender. The gun, a phallic symbol, is Hedda projecting her masculinity. The way she always shows the gun, aiming it at Brack and talking about the gun to Tesman alarming him. Brack towards the end of the play blackmails Hedda about the death of lovburg and to avoid he being publically disgraced must tend to the will of Brack, â€Å"Brack-â€Å" Willingly every single evening, Miss Tesman. We shall have a very pleasant time here you and I† Hedda – â€Å"Yes that is what you are looking forward to isn’t, Mr. Brack? You as the only cock in the yard.† Hedda then kills herself representing her making sure Brack does not get the upper hand over her and gets the ultimate freedom from men trying to dominate her. Hedda Gabler also shown to hate thought of pregnancy rejecting the common gender stereotype. This is shown through a conversation between Julie Tesman and Hedda Gabler: Tesman – â€Å"Yes but have you noticed how plumped she’s grown, and how well she is? How much she has filled out on her travels?† Hedda – â€Å"I’m exactly the same as I was when I went away.† This quote represents that Hedda resents the idea of her being pregnant and will avoid the topic completely. Through this Hedda further rebels against her gender stereotype by not wanting to have kids which all women at that time where expected to have. She further rebels against this concept by ultimately her death by suicide. Through killing herself it shows the ultimate rejection of society’s expectation for a female and projects Hedda’s resent to conform. Julie Tesman is a character in the play that conforms to the female gender stereotype. Julie Tesman portrays this in the paly by constantly asking Tesman if Hedda is pregnant â€Å"Yes but have you noticed how plumped she’s grown, and how well she is? How much she has filled out on her travels?† which is important because she believes she should be. The fact that Julie Tesman serves Jorgen Tesman implements that she works for men a common female gender stereotype that women work for men. The fact that Julie Tesman will sacrifice everything for Jorgen shows her as mother figure toward Jorgen. Julie is seen as a mother figure, which shows that she is conforming to a female gender stereotype. In the play Hedda gabbler the author has created characters that challenge and conform to the common gender stereotypes. Hedda gabbler through being portrayed as masculine and always not wanting to be controlled sows how she challenges the female gender stereotype. Julie Tesman portrayed as a caring, old mother figure conforms to a female gender stereotype because of her show of affection, fragility and seen as a mother figure. Through the use of verbal and non-verbal aspects the author has projected these two characters to conform and the other to rebel against the common gender stereotype.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Essay example -- essays research papers

POLYCYSTIC OVARIES SYNDROME Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome (PCOS) is an ovulation disorder and infertility that occurs in many women. Polycystic ovaries syndrome dates back to 1845 where it was described in a French manuscript as being â€Å"changes in the ovaries†. It was called â€Å"sclerocystic†. Polycystic ovaries syndrome is a problem that occurs in with the ovaries. A â€Å"polycystic ovary is characterized as being a tough, thickened, shiny white covering overlying a layer of many small cysts just under the ovarian surface.† (Thatcher, 10). That was the description that was found in the French manuscript and is still being used to this day for doctors to define polycystic ovaries. A wedge resection in the early 1900’s was the first form of treatment for this syndrome. PCOS involves more than just the ovaries filled with small cysts. Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome causes infertility in women.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome can cause a number of symptoms. Its can cause everything from obesity to missed periods. It also causes women to have more of the male hormone in their bodies, which cause male hair growth. Not all of PCOS patients have excessive hair growth some may have other skin conditions, like acne. PCOS is the one of the most notorious cause if missed menstrual cycles and â€Å"infertility due to the lack of ovulation†. (Thatcher, 12)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There are three main reasons women with PCOS get medical attention. The first is that they have missed menstrual cycles. A woman’s period should not be light, short, or irregular. There are steps that a woman’s body needs to go through in order for women to become pregnant. There is a normal menstrual cycle that a woman’s body   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   should go through and if it doesn’t then the women has an irregular cycle. This process the movement of an egg to a fertilizing position, developing a lining in the uterus, then the shedding of that lining when the egg doesn’t become fertilized. The second reason woman get medical attention for PCOS, is that they have worries about their physical ... ...e to me in order to try and regulate my periods. If I did not want to have a child then he would have prescribed some type of birth control pill to aid in this process of regulating my cycle. The little cysts form when my egg comes out and does not go any further than the outside of my ovary. My egg latches on to my ovary and forms into a cyst. This is what caused me irregular menstrual cycles. I am currently overweight and trying to get it under control by exercising and dieting. PCOS is something that is common among a lot of women and it can happen to anyone even the healthiest woman.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Work Cited Hammerly, Milton M.D and Kimball, Cheryl, â€Å"What to Do When The Doctor Says its PCOS†, (Fair Winds Press, 2003). INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN AUTOMO BILE INDUSTRY Automobile is one of the largest industries in global market.Being the leader in product and process technologies in the manufacturing sector, it has been recognized as one of the drivers of economic growth. During the last decade, well directed efforts have been made to provide a new look to the automobile policy for realizing the sector's full potential for the economy. Aggressive marketing by the auto finance companies have also played a significant role in boosting automobile demand, especially from the population in the middle income group. A Nations economy is well known from its transport system. For instant and rapid growth in economy, a well-developed and well-networked transportation system is essential. As India's transport network is developing at a fast pace, Indian Automobile Industry is growing too. Also, the Automobile industry has strong backward and forward linkages and hence provides employment to a large section of the population. Thus the role of Au tomobile Industry is very essential in Indian economy. Various types of vehicles are manufactured by the Automobile Industry. Indian Automobile Industry includes the manufacturing of trucks, buses, passenger cars, defence vehicles, two-wheelers.The two-wheeler manufacturing is dominated by companies like TVS, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (Pvt. ) Ltd. , Hero Honda, Yamaha, Bajaj, etc. The automobile industry in the country is one of the key sectors of the economy in terms of the employment opportunities that it offers. The industry directly employs close to around 0. 2 million people and indirectly employs around 10 million people. The prospects of the industry also has a bearing on the auto-component industry which is also a major sector in the Indian economy directly employing 0. 25 million people.BCG Matrix Representation of Automobile Sector among various Sectors:- In an economy, different industries are present and different industries have different growth rate as compared to the growth of the economy. OVERVIEW OF TWO WHEELER SECTOR Two Wheeler IndustryIndian two -wheeler contributes the largest volumes amongst all the segments in automobile industry. This segment can be broadly categorized into 3 sub-segments viz. ; scooters, motorcycles and mopeds. In the last four to five years, the two-wheeler market has witnessed a marked shift towards motorcycles at the expense of scooters. In the rural areas, consumers have come to prefer sturdier bikes to withstand the bad road conditi ons. In the process the share of motorcycle segment has grown from 48% to 58%, the share of scooters declined drastically from 33% to 25%, while that of mopeds declined by 2% from 19% to 17% during the year 2008-09.The Euro emission norms effective from April 2000 led to the existing players in the two- stroke segment to install catalytic converters. All the new models are now being replaced by 4-stroke motorcycles. Excise duty on motorcycles has been reduced from 32% to 24%, resulting in price reduction, which has aided in propelling the demand for motorcycles. Within the two-wheeler industry, motorcycle segment grew at a phenomenally high rate of 35% as against a deceleration of 3% for scooters and 27% for mopeds. In fact, motorcycle has been taking away the share of scooters and mopeds in a 4. million two-wheeler market and surging ahead with its market share of 68%. The increasing demand from semi-urban and rural segments may have caused this positive shift towards motorcycles. Also, easy credit coupled with low interest rate regime, constrained personal transport, increasing income levels in middle class and higher aspirations of young people all seem to be the factors responsible for such high growth in two-wheelers. The growth in two-wheelers has been robust enough to counter the slowdown and other factors constraining the overall business activity in the country. Also, rationalization of excise duty in the Union Budget 2002-03 had a positive impact on the demand for motorcycles. We also expect the motorcycles to continue to lead the two-wheeler segment like in all other Asian countries. Available forecasts suggest that this trend would continue for another couple of years and the industry would record nearly double-digit average annual growth up to 2006. During the year, there have been important developments in two-wheeler industry. The competition has strengthened though there are hardly any new entrants into the industry. There is an increasing emphas is on price and this has led to cost cutting efforts all across the industry, thereby, making the customer an ultimate beneficiary. The trend also saw introduction of new motorcycles with capacity ranging from 100 to 180cc bikes. We anticipate that many more new models will be launched during the year and provide customers plenty of choice at competitive prices. Businesses cannot consistently grow at 25-30 per cent. Each business has a tendency to taper and plateau after attaining a particular size. An annual growth rate of 10-12 per cent over a period of time is extremely healthy. The TCS study rankings are conducted at the motorcycle segment-level to provide comparisons among similar groups of motorcycles. Motorcycles ranking highest in their respective segments for TCS are: Hero Honda CD100 SS (best standard motorcycle segment); Hero Honda Splendor (best executive motorcycle segment); Bajaj Pulsar (best premium motorcycle segment); and Royal Enfield Bullet Electra (best cruiser mo torcycle segment). The feeling of freedom and being one with the Nature comes only from riding a two wheeler. Indians prefer the two wheelers because of their small manageable size, low maintenance, and pricing and easy loan repayments.Indian streets are full of people of all age groups riding a two wheeler. Motorized two wheelers are seen as a symbol of status by the populace. Two wheelers in India are the second largest producer and manufacturer of two-wheelers in the world. It stands next only to Japan and China in terms of the number of two-wheelers produced and domestic sales respectively. Indian two-wheeler industry has got spectacular growth in the last few years. Indian two-wheeler industry had a small beginning in the early 50's. The Automobile Products of India (API) started manufacturing scooters in the country.Bikes are a major segment of Indian two wheeler industry, the other two being scooters and mopeds. Indian companies are among the largest two-wheeler manufacturers in the world. In the initial stages, the scooter segment was dominated by API; it was later overtaken by Bajaj Auto. Although various government and private enterprises entered the fray for scooters, the only new player that has lasted till today is LML. The motorcycle segment was initially dominated by Enfield 350cc bikes and Escorts 175cc bike. The two-wheeler market was opened to foreign competition in the mid-80s.And the then market leaders – Escorts and Enfield – were caught unaware by the onslaught of the 100cc bikes of the four Indo-Japanese joint ventures. With the availability of fuel efficient low power bikes, demand swelled, resulting in Hero Honda – then the only producer of four stroke bikes (100cc category), gaining a top slot. The first Japanese motorcycles were introduced in the early eighties. TVS Suzuki and Hero Honda brought in the first two-stroke and four-stroke engine motorcycles respectively. These two players initially started with assem bly of CKD kits, and later on progressed to indigenous manufacturing. In the 90s the major growth for motorcycle segment was brought in by Japanese motorcycles, which grew at a rate of nearly 25% CAGR in the last five years. The industry had a smooth ride in the 50s, 60s and 70s when the Government prohibited new entries and strictly controlled capacity expansion. The industry saw a sudden growth in the 80s. The industry witnessed a steady growth of 14% leading to a peak volume of 1. 9mn vehicles in 1990. In 1990, the entire automobile industry saw a drastic fall in demand. This resulted in a decline of 15% in 1991 and 8% in 1992, resulting in a production loss of 0. mn vehicles. Barring Hero Honda, all the major producers suffered from recession in FY93 and FY94. Hero Honda showed a marginal decline in 1992. The reasons for recession in the sector were the incessant rise in fuel prices, high input costs and reduced purchasing power due to significant rise in general price level and credit crunch in consumer financing. Factors like increased production in 1992, due to new entrants coupled with the recession in the industry resulted in company either reporting losses or a fall in profits. Two wheeler fleet composition in India:- STRUCTURE OF TWO WHEELER INDUSTRY Mopeds:- Over the last 15 years, moped’s contribution in overall 2-wheelers has declined significantly and now it remains a marginal category with just one manufacturer for the product. Its contribution in the 2-wheelers industry now stands at 5% and we expect that this segment will continue to be marginalised. The only player in this segment is TVS Motor. * Scooters:- Advent of fuel efficient motorcycles in the Indian 2-wheelers industry led to decline of Scooters. However, over the last five years, it has made a recovery and is emerging as a niche segment targeted towards women commuters. One of the reasons for this is the increasing need of mobility for the women commuters especially in the urba n areas is due to higher number of college going girls and greater participation of women in urban work force. The product itself has gone for a complete revamp and now this category mainly consists of gearless products. This segment is now dominated by Japanese manufacturers with HMSI having the leadership. HH, which is a late entrant in this segment, has also cornered a sizeable market share in the scooter segment. Another development in this segment is the launch of battery operated scooters. However, given the high replacement cost for the batteries, this has remained a marginal segment. * Motor cycles and bikes:- * Executive Segment Executive segment is the largest motorcycle segment and this is the stronghold of market leader HH. Competitors have tried to challenge HH in this segment, however all such challenges have fizzled out over time. With higher growth in economy segment, the contribution of this segment had come below 50% in FY06. However over the last three years, it ha s made a strong come back and now accounts for almost 60% of the motorcycle share. * Premium SegmentThis segment was creation of HH with ‘CBZ' And ‘KARIZMA’; however major boost to the segment was given by BAJAJ through ‘Pulsar' which has dominated the segment. HH has remained a marginal player in this segment and one of the reasons for this is presence of HMSI in this segment. This segment remains a small segment in the Indian market with contribution of around 23% to the motorcycle industry. This is the performance segment and customers pay a premium for the novelty. Hence constant upgradation in the product is a requisite for success in this segment. Usage Pattern of two-wheelers in IndiaIs quite different from other countries * Initial cost and fuel economy are highest priority. * Low maintenance costs are desired. * Small entrepreneurs and farmers conduct their business carrying loads. * Very limited usage for sports bike. * Indians prefer the two wheel ers because of their small manageable size, low maintenance, and pricing and easy loan repayments. But the company proved the doomsayers wrong and came out with a very successful `TVS Victor'. In the mid 80 Honda motors of Japan joined hands w ith the largest bicycle maker of India the Hero cycles to create Hero Honda which in a couple of decades or so have gone on to become the single largest motorcycle company in the world. Though Honda has come on its own on the Indian market yet it will be providing technological support to Hero Honda for the next ten years. Thus presenting a unique situation in which the company will be in direct competition with the company which it has been associated for nearly two decades. However, the company has a binding clause with Honda's scooter manufacturing Indian subsidiary, preventing it from making scooters till 2004. Hero Honda Motors, India's largest motorcycle company, has launched the premium segment 223cc motorcycle Karizma priced at Rs 79,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Many of the products which the company has started with have been phased off. The TCS study examines customer evaluations at three distinct o wnership periods: 1 to 6 months, 7 to 18 months, and 25 to 36 months. This helps in understanding the differences in satisfaction during initial ownership, in-warranty and post-warranty ownership periods. Satisfaction ratings decline as the length of vehicle ownership increases. However, Hero Honda Splendor is among the few models to maintain consistency across the three ownership periods. PRICING Pricing is a important component of marketing mix of the firm. Determining the prices of different products of a firm is very difficult task of the marketing manager. Price denotes money value of a product. If represent the amount of money for which a product can be exchange. Porters five force model for Hero Honda:- Bargaining Power of suppliers: Suppliers of auto components are fragmented and are extremely critical for this industry since most of the component work is outsourced. Proper supply chain management is a costly yet critical need. Bargaining Power of Buyer:Buyers in automobile market have more choice to choose from and the increasing competition is driving the bargaining power of customers uphill. With more models to choose from in almost all categories, the market forces have empowered the buyers to a large extent. Competitive rivalry: The industry rivalry is extremely high with any product being matched in a few months by competitor. This instinct of the industry is primarily driven by the technical capabilities acquired over years of gestation under the technical collaboration with international players. Threat of substitute Products: There is no perfect substitute to this industry. Also, if there is any substitute to a two-wheeler, Bajaj has presence in it. Cars, which again are a mode of transport, do never directly compete or come in consideration while selecting a two-wheeler, cycles do never even compete with the low entry level moped for even this choice comes at a comparatively higher economic potential. Threat of new entrantsHere the threat of new depends on the economies of scale of the cost of production, and customer switching costs, access to industry distribution channels. | | S. W. O. T. COMPARISION OF ADVERTISING STRATEY OF HERO HONDA AND BAJAJ ADVERTISING STRATEGY OF HERO HONDA:- Currently the number one company in terms of sales and has been dominant in the two-wheeler segment since the past decade. Since the inception of hero Honda, the company has been using television as a major role for its publicity.Though hero Honda was dominant in sales it lacked the skills of creating a spectacular ad till now. Though it had a vast range of mobiles, its advertising strategy was not up to the mark. For its publicity hero Honda has been using many famous celebrities like Saurav Ganguly, the captain of Indian cricket team, Hritik Roshan and other famous personalities as their brand ambassadors. Thus, hero Honda has been spending huge amounts on its publicity. Th e biggest of all is the sponsorship of the â€Å"WORLD CUP† for which Hero Honda has the credit of being the only two-wheeler company in the world to do so.Presently they have tried to gain publicity by sponsoring the hockey world cup event which is the national game of India. There by creating a sense oneness and Nationalism through providing publicity and encouragement to the game by various ad’s. | By sponsoring the hockey wprld cup event ,which is a national game of india| | | ADVERTISING STRATEGY OF BAJAJ:- Bajaj is always known for its outstanding ads over the period of time. Since its inception, Bajaj has come out with variety of ads and were always successful in their advertisements. Scooters were well known by the brand name of Bajaj.Be it any scooter, one used to recognize it by the brand name Bajaj. This was the identity a decade ago which the Bajaj has still maintained. Bajaj is always known for its ads without well-known brand ambassadors which is again a plus point to its cart as it saves a huge cost in terms of brand ambassadors unlike Hero Honda and TVS. Prior, Bajaj used to convey the feeling of ‘Indianness’ in its ads. With a punch line ‘Hamara Bajaj’ Bajaj drove into everybody’s hearts and the title song of ‘Naye Bharat Ki Naye Tasveer’ added a great value to its mobikes and scooters.A couple of years back, Bajaj had introduced an advertisement which promoted all the different ranges it had, wherein they had shown each product they had with a feeling of Indianness. Example: Eliminator passes-by a rangoli and drives slowly sideways without disturbing it. People on boxer pass-by a temple and bend their head to give a little offering. Such ads had revealing Indian culture had a great effect on Indians and Bajaj was successful in most of its ads. But recently, Bajaj had changed its brand logo along with its punch line i. e. ‘Hamara Bajaj’ got converted to ‘Inspiring C onfidence’.The reason for this change as told by the company officials was to keep pace with the new technologies in the fast moving world. Even though it had changed its punch line, it didn’t have much effect on its brand image. A year back, Bajaj introduced DTSi technology upgrading its always successful PULSAR 150cc and 180cc. Though Bajaj had changed its identity it still dominates for its creativity in ads.
